Day 1 and 2
So our journey has begun! My sister, Tess took time out of her busy Saturday and drove us to the train station. Thanks, Tess!!! We appreciate you soooo much!
The train (40 minutes late) took us to Martinez where we were supposed to have just under a 2 hour wait. So we thought our wait would be shorter … wrong! Apparently, the train to which we were to transfer, had a problem. In Oakland, a private train car (more on this in a few minutes) messed up the schedule with unhooking from the main train and with each announcement, there was more and more of a delay. So instead of 10:50 as our boarding time, we finally boarded the train at 1:30. (Sunday Morning~ Happy 4th of July!!). Our roomette was already made up. (Basically a bunk-bed in a closet) … so we went right to bed and the rumble and rocking motion of the train put us to sleep! Ahhhhhh
Breakfast at 7:30 … yawn, we were all zombies but enjoyed our breakfast of omelets, French toast, and oatmeal/fruit and juice. The meals all come with the sleeper rooms, so it was nice to get it for “free”.
While waiting in the lounge car for our assigned lunch time, I met a man and his daughter who were in Oakland when the train had all its problems. The man said that people (the very wealthy ones) can own their own train cars. They pay to hook it up to a train that's going where they want to go. They bring their own servants to serve them meals, make up beds and make their travel comfortable. He saw inside as it was carted off to the train yard, and saw how luxurious it was - very posh! So because a worker didn't know how to unhook it properly, it took 2 hours to fix it. I doubt there's a lot of people who own their own train cars!
This train is different than the other trains that we've experienced in the past in that it had it's own movie theater! At least it played DVDs in the bottom of the lounge car. The only thing missing was the popcorn. I went down there and saw "Planet 51" A cute animated movie. It didn't quite make sense - watching movie on the "big screen" and having the jostling of the train and the need keep your balence as we sat in the theater seats!
