Kentucky Down Under

Friday, we planned to go to the Mammoth Caves. This was on the western Kentucky and in a different time zone from Louisville. So although it seemed like a two hour drive, it appeared to only be one hour difference from the time we left.

We chose the 2 hour tour that would take us down 296 steps down in the cave. I should say 296 narrow, slippery, curvy, and at times steep steps down. But the trip down was worth it. I asked Jonathan if he would help me with his impressions and if he would report on this time here. This is what his thoughts were;

"This is the main thing I was excited about for the whole trip - going to see the cave and the stalactites and stalagmites. My favorite formation of rock was called "Cave Bacon". It was called this because it looked like bacon; it was thick and wide and it had curves in it. Another thing we saw that was really cool was a formation called "Frozen Niagra" It looked like Niagra Falls because the water drips over the side and leaves mineral deposits (Limestone). It was shiny and wet. Soon after that, we walked 67 further steps down and saw the stalactites and stalagmites. Sometimes they connected and they formed a column.
It was interesting to find out how many animals were living in the cave like bats, fish and bugs. We didn't get a chance to see all of them, but we did see cave crickets, a spider and a beetle.
At one point they wanted to show us what it was like before the lights were installed. When they turned off all the lights, it was SO dark that when I touched my nose with the palm of my hand, I couldn't even see it!
It was so much fun! If you're ever in Kentucky, try to go to Mammoth Caves It will really be worth the trip. " by Jonathan
